PPPoE or DHCP?

Be Connect offers flexible connection methods for its Fibre Broadband services, supporting both PPPoE and DHCP (IPoE). Read on to understand which is best for your setup.

PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet)

PPPoE is a traditional method for connecting to broadband services. One of its key advantages is that it maintains an active session, providing the ISP with greater visibility into the current state of the connection. This can be particularly useful for diagnosing disconnections, as the protocol’s messaging offers detailed information about the reasons behind a connection drop.

Pros:

  • Maintains an active session for better ISP visibility.
  • Provides detailed diagnostic information.

Cons:

  • Requires more setup on the router, such as configuring a username and password.
  • A factory reset router might not have the necessary settings, especially if VLAN tagging (usually default) is required.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) or IPoE (IP over Ethernet)

DHCP, also known as IPoE, has been widely adopted by service providers due to its ease of use for clients. Most routers with default settings are configured to connect using DHCP, meaning a factory reset router should work seamlessly (assuming no VLAN tagging is required). This method is also beneficial for troubleshooting, as you can directly connect a computer to the LFC’s ONT port to obtain an IP address and test the service without needing a router. This helps in ruling out router-related issues. Additionally, some users report slightly faster speeds with DHCP due to lower overhead compared to PPPoE encapsulation.

Pros:

  • Easier setup for clients.
  • Factory reset routers typically work without additional configuration.
  • Simplifies troubleshooting by allowing direct computer connection to the ONT.
  • Potentially faster speeds due to lower overhead.

Cons:

  • Provides less session information between the client and ISP, which can limit troubleshooting data.

Important Note

You cannot run both PPPoE and DHCP simultaneously, as this will cause service disruptions. Please make sure you only enable one method when setting up your router.

Default router, DNS and SMTP settings are below.

ADSL

PPP protocol: PPP over ATM (PPPoA) with VC-multiplexed encapsulation (VC-MUX)
VPI: 0
VCI: 100
MTU: 1500

Username: You should have received an email confirming the username of your connection. If you are not sure of your username you can just use the default username log a support ticket at bedigital.co.nz requesting this.

Password: This will be your Be Connect password.

VDSL

PPP protocol: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
Encapsulation: 802.1Q ( Also known as VLAN tagging)
VLAN tag ID:10
MTU: 1492

Fibre (UFB)

PPP protocol: Encapsulation Protocol: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
Encapsulation: 802.1Q ( Also known as VLAN tagging)
VLAN tag ID :10
MTU: 1492

Username: Please use the username that we have provided. This would have been emailed to you. Please log a support ticket at bedigital.co.nz if you do not have this.

Password: This will be your Be Connect password.

DNS SETTINGS

Help my internet is not working

Having trouble with your Broadband Connection?  Try these steps before logging a fault.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
  • Step 1: Restart your equipment power off all devices that are connected to the internet including your modem. Restart the modem first, once the modem comes back online, you can restart your other devices and then try connecting to the internet.
  • Step 2: Check cables and power ensure all cables are plugged in correctly and securely and power is switched on. Loose cables or faulty cables can cause a loss of service.
  • Step 3: Check the modem lights
    Scenario 1: The DSL light on your modem is flashing or off or if you are on Fibre and your WAN light is off. Please check our outages page before contacting our team for further assistance.
    Scenario 2: The DSL/WAN light on the modem is solid green or blue and the Internet light on the modem is red or off.  Please contact your modem supplier.
    Scenario 3: Modem will not power on. Please try your modem at another powerpoint and contact if that doesn’t work contact your modem supplier.
  • Step 4 (Fibre only): Check the Optical Network Terminal lights
    Scenario 1: The Optical/PON light on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is red. Please check our outages page before contacting our team for further assistance.
    Scenario 2: The Alarm/LOS light on your ONT is red.
